Stress is a normal part of life. As much as we’d all like to just drop everything and head to the Hamptons for the week when feeling overwhelmed, we usually have to power through and keep on working. Most of us don’t have a ton of time to focus on staying stress-free, so here are some quick ways to help de-stress when you’re busy or don’t have a lot of time to devote to total relaxation.

Here are five ways to reduce stress:

TUNE OUT THE WORLD WITH YOGA

I believe the quickest and easiest way to reduce stress is by unplugging entirely from technology and enveloping myself in some yoga or Pilates. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I like to turn off all of my electronics and focus on really being in the moment. This can be anything from some light stretching to some full-on advanced yoga poses. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you don’t have that phone anywhere near you. It is essential to disconnect yourself from those constant push notifications that social media and emails relentlessly send.

PAMPER YOURSELF WITH A MASSAGE

Practicing self-love is extremely important, especially when you’re feeling like the entire world is against you. If you’re the type that always tries to please others, you’re going to spread yourself too thin, and that can lead to a rather unfulfilling life. Carve out a little time for yourself – treat yourself to a gentle massage by your favorite massage therapist, or even better, have your significant other gift you a massage when you get home from work. During that time, relax sis, and release all worries about abiding by a schedule.

DON’T MEDICATE, MEDITATE

Sometimes life can become super overwhelming, and it can feel like everything is moving a million miles a minute. When this happens, I have to literally take a step back and breathe in some deep, calming breaths. I have no shame of doing this in public neither. I’ll dedicate 30-60 minutes to meditation exercises that help me calm my nerves. What I like to do is configure my apartment to a nice and cool temperature, then I’ll put on some soft and soothing music, find a comfortable place to sit down and focus on centering myself. Remember to practice some breathing exercises and think pleasant thoughts to help you feel weightless and serene.

CHARGE YOUR DIET

Whether we like the inevitable or not, our diet is the catalyst that impacts our mood and happiness. Try and find something that works best for you. I always like to incorporate at least one serving of fruits and veggies into my daily meal routine. As a result, I frequently notice a change in me for the better. Maybe substitute a smoothie over a can of soda, or slather that salad with kale instead of iceberg lettuce. What's important is that you try and absorb as much healthy nutrition as you can before the day is up.

LAUGH IT UP

Laughter is the ultimate dose of medicine, as the (rightful) proverbial saying goes. We all have that one hysterical friend. Why not invite them over and engage in a healthy laugh session? It’ll ease the stress in no time. Or better yet, turn on something that you know will make you grin from ear to ear. This resource will release endorphins, which ultimately, will release unwanted stress.

The best part about these routines is you avoid costly medical bills with a trip to the doctor, so why not give it a try?
