If you have been looking for a way to calm your stress or anxiety, give CBD a try. Its full name is cannabidiol, which is a compound found in the marijuana plant.

“The best CBD product for anxiety and stress may vary depending on the severity and type of symptoms, as well as personal preference,” forensic psychiatrist at Clinic Spots Ketan Parmar MBBS, DPM, MD, told 21Ninety.

There are several ways to take CBD. Tinctures (oils in a dropper), capsules, and gummies are the edible options to get your CBD. But, you can also apply a topical – like a lotion or balm – to calm down your physical body.

All of these options are helpful in reducing symptoms of stress and anxiety.

What are the different types of CBD?

“There are three main types of CBD products: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate,” Dr. Parmar explained. According to the psychiatrist, each type is slightly different.

Full-spectrum CBD: This variety has all of the naturally occurring compounds that are found within a hemp plant. It also has very low, and legal, amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

Broad-spectrum CBD: This type of CBD is similar to full-spectrum in that it has a majority of naturally occurring compounds except THC.

Isolate CBD: Like its name suggests, isolated CBD “is pure CBD without any other cannabinoids or terpenes,” according to Dr, Parmar.

What is the best type of CBD for relaxation?

The best type of CBD for relaxation depends on how you’re trying to relax.

“For anxiety and stress, I would recommend broad spectrum CBD or CBD isolates as they are free from THC, eliminating any potential THC-induced anxiety,” cannabidiol (CBD) researcher Bernard Vos PhD, told 21Ninety.

However, if you’re looking to physically relax, Dr. Parmar suggested that you might want to opt for full-spectrum CBD. So, the type of CBD you take is really up to you. But, if you’re still unsure, consult your medical professional for suggestions.

“CBD is not a one-size-fits-all, it’s a one-size-fits-most,” Dr. Vos said.

How does CBD help someone relax?

CBD helps you calm down by interacting with two systems in the body: the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the serotonin system. “The ECS is a complex network of receptors and molecules that regulate various bodily functions, including mood, sleep, appetite, and pain,” Dr. Parmar explains.

As for serotonin, it’s “a neurotransmitter that affects anxiety, depression, and happiness,” according to the forensic psychiatrist. When you take CBD you could notice an increase in your mood which can combat symptoms of anxiety.

“Research indicates that CBD has strong potential as a treatment for several forms of anxiety, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder (PD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),” Dr. Parmar stated.
