Early graduates entering the workforce for the first time have found it more challenging than ever to secure a full-time job.

New graduates remain unemployed despite applying to many and sometimes several hundred jobs. Gen Z’s frustrations with navigating the current job market have led some to share their experiences on social media. TikTok user Meolah Delinois opened up about her struggles of landing a job in human relations. She has since created an unemployment series dedicated to giving viewers an unfiltered version of her navigating the tough job market.

“I’m always applying to a new job because you never know the opportunity you’re going to get,” Delinois said. “I keep hearing back rejections or not hearing back anything at all.”

Delinois says she just doesn’t understand the issue.

“You would think that because I have previous experience and have done stuff in the past, I would have an offer. It’s getting super frustrating,” she shared.

Delinois’s job hunting experience is similar to other videos on the trending #unemployed, which has more than 150,000 posts.

New research shows that a hiring shift is occurring in the job market. Employers are drifting from relying on a person’s educational background or past experiences. Instead, companies are turning towards skills-based hiring as their new form of candidate assessment.

What Is Skill-Based Hiring?

Skills-based hiring is when a recruiter or hiring manager focuses on evaluating a job seeker’s skills more than their education or former job roles.

Fortune reports that a survey found 92 percent of employers said skills-based hiring is more effective at identifying talented candidates than a resume. Traditional hiring practices include screening for education, credentials and experience. One of the main differences for skills-based hiring is that it’s more specific when determining if a candidate possesses the necessary skills to complete a role successfully.

What Can Gen Z Job Seekers Do?

As the recruitment process continues to evolve, Gen Z can adjust to the shift by increasing their skill set through certifications.

Professional certifications show recruiters that a potential employee completed a specific source of training. These documents ensure employers that job seekers are equipped with criteria that align with the role being applied for. While they are not a replacement for a degree, they can compliment a person’s educational background.

Also, certifications help job seekers stand out from other candidates because of the additional training they obtain. Some certifications may require a fee, but many are free to complete.
