Gone are the days when Black haircare and beauty were relegated to the sidelines. I feel my heart swell with pride when I see Black-owned businesses on the rise and making bold statements about the audiences they cater to. My heart actually soars when I see such companies doing the necessary work of presenting women that look like me, with naturally curly hair like mine, as the faces of their company. CurlyChic Haircare is one of those beauty brands telling the world that our textured hair is the “rebirth of cool.” They proudly affirm that our hair is naturally chic.

It’s because of brands like CurlyChic that I’ve been more than comfortable wearing my natural hair. I don’t feel pressured to straighten it when I’m going for a job interview nor do I worry that my hair will be damaged by going natural. How mind-blowing it is to remember how I believed the natural state of my hair would be “damaging” to my hair growth. I thought that I wouldn’t be able to manage it and then all my worries would pile up. Like many, what was lacking in my understanding was simply how to take care of my natural hair. Sadly, this is a misconception we fall into when the fullness and bounce of our curls aren't appreciated by the society we live in. These old ideas are actively changing because of Black-owned beauty brands like CurlyChic.

When a pathway isn’t readily provided for us, it’s touching how often Black people are pushed to create something out of need. The creators behind CurlyChic heard the call to get into the haircare game because of their children. “Curly, kinky, wavy, coarse, and coily — the heads of our little ones ran the gamut. And the products available to them were often too heavy, or left their hair frizzy or damaged,” as mentioned in the CurlyChic About page. Seeing this need in their own lives allowed the brand to establish CurlyKids in 2012. Just two years later they expanded their line to the utterly stylish and representative CurlyChic.

I became obsessed with the brand when a friend of mine actually gave me a sample of their constantly sold out "Coconut for Curls" hair oil. When I tried it I felt like my afro got the shine and moisture it needed. I tend to have dry hair, prone to breakage, therefore I’m always looking for something that can enhance shine while also nourishing my hair. CurlyChic has just the products for people with similar concerns and for those of us looking for something that can hold our stylish looks.

After multiple uses, I’ve found their products to be moisturizing and rich, fit for various hair types. What makes me even more ready to use their products is the fact that when I go to their website or Instagram page, I see women with different hair textures, women of different shapes and sizes, and women of different complexions. Take the body positivity advocate and model Lornalitz Baez for instance. She recently rocked her CurlyChic infused curls on the red carpet of a movie screening. Seeing this was another confirmation to me that straight hair isn’t the standard for an acceptable hairstyle. The more I’ve defined what is beautiful to me, the more my default idea of beauty has changed. It changes, even more, when brands embrace the “for us, by us” mentality.

What I also can’t help but love is how affordable CurlyChic’s products are. Anyone can be a chic goddess with curly locks because the brand offers products with reasonable price tags. Their top seller the Your Curls Defined Gel is $7.00 while their sold-out Moisture In A Minute leave-in gel is just $6.00. I get my CurlyChic products at my local Sally Beauty Supply store or on their website when I really need it and just can’t wait. They can also be found in Walmart.

I believe CurlyChic is a champion of the natural hair revolution because they offer products for the woman wanting to spruce up her everyday look or make a statement and express themselves at a soiree. CurlyChic Haircare is for everyone but, most of all, CurlyChic Haircare is for us.
