September was a huge shift for magazine’s fall issues — many of them strolled down a different and exciting path by having women of color be the face of their fall issue. Iconic women such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Tracee Ellis Ross, Zendaya and Lupita Nyong’o graced us with their presence on the covers of magazines which included: Vogue, Elle Canada, Marie Claire, Porter and British Vogue.

While the assumption was that this would only be a trend, it turns out that Black women are still on the cover of several magazines — most recently Lupita Nyong’o was on the cover of Vogue España, Duckie Thot is on the cover for Wonderland, Jourdan Dunn is on the cover of Elle Italia and Rea Milla covers Marie Claire Hungary.

The hope is that Black women are not seen as a trend but seen as worthy and beautiful as the white women who have been on the covers of these various magazines time and time again. While many champion for change, Bethann Hardison has worked very hard to repair the industry and place a spotlight on women of color. Hardison wrote an open letter in 2013, calling out the fashion industry for the lack of diversity that was present on the runways.

"Two, three, four [models of color] is nice. But not when there's 30 girls. I'm very pleased with any improvement, and I say that respectfully. I would definitely like to see, long term, consistency. Not just one or two seasons, not hit or miss. But just that there are consistently more models of color,” stated Hardison in her letter.

Yes…it’s my birthday, actually yesterday, September 30th. It’s truly the moment of recognizing the gift of maturing. I often reminds others “a lot of us didn’t make it this morning” to remind us to be grateful and stop complaining over meaningless things, i.e the weather. I have noticed how happy I have been recently, still coming up with ideas, with a bit of passion, to succeed at moving others forward. Often as we mature, people “feel” age and can see the difference between how they use to feel and can’t help but compare, and the word “old” becomes frequent in their head if not out of their mouth. I must admit “it ain’t like it use to be”. But what you lose physically, you seem to gain “a less is more” attitude in respect to the rest of the world. There is a certain great comfort of just being “self”. Just to say…I can still dance a great salsa, maybe not the same House music “free-style” as I use to due to flexibility. Dancing for me is everything and I can still make it happen. Also, to the patience you no longer need to have to put up with nonsense is also a gift of maturity. I love everything about maturity…from the past opportunity of cheaper real estate, former marriages, senior rates for movies, transportation, respect from the public at large due to grey hair, and still the love from others of same and younger generations. And being elder has not stop the charm and admiration from those in appreciation. I truly aim to always “bring something to the table”. I realize over years, it comes natural, but I too take notice of who I am and who I have become. We never start out the way we end up re: our youth and full maturity. Thank you ALL for the love, appreciation and support. And for those who left us recently, peaceful journey. #jordanbarnessrip 🖤 📷by: @nicobustos

“Eyes are on an industry that season after season watches fashion design houses consistently use … one or no models of color. No matter the intention, the result is racism. … Whether it’s the decision of the designer, stylist or casting director, that decision to use basically all white models, reveals a trait that is unbecoming to modern society.”
