I’m not sure if it was psychological or what, but when I turned 30, “anti-aging” suddenly became a very important hyphenate in my skincare routine.

We’ve all heard the phrase “Black don’t crack” (90% of the time referencing a picture of Angela Basset) and while that may be true to some degree, there is, of course, some need for anti-aging products to keep our skin radiant and glowing as we age.

In an article originally published on Byrdie, skincare expert Felicia Walker Benson spoke to the magazine about the “Black don’t crack” myth, and ways us Black women can ensure we age gracefully and with ease.

“While black skin is slower to show the typical signs of aging like fine lines, deep forehead wrinkles, and crow's feet around the eyes, our skin is prone to uneven tone, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and sagging, all of which rob our skin of its youthful glow and makes us appear older than we really are,” Benson shared with Byrdie.

Benson mentions that while there are many products in the at-home skin-care market that can help with hyperpigmentation, blotchy skin, and sagging skin, some concern has been raised as to whether these products are safe for dark skin.

Speaking to professional dermatologist, Dr. Neal Schultz, Benson got the confirmation that most products on the market for at home use, are, in fact generally safe to use as they are regulated by the FDA.

So yes, the coast is clear ladies. Read on to discover five skincare tools you can add to your repertoire for flawless skin.

1. Dermaflash

The first item Benson suggested to Byrdie is the Dermaflash, which is an at-home facial exfoliator, which according to the company website “removes the oldest layer of dead skin cells, built-up debris and peach fuzz, instantly revealing smooth, radiant, camera-ready skin.” It is to be used once every ten days.

2. Nuface Trinity Facial Toning Device

Next up, Benson revealed to Byrdie the NūFace Trinity Facial Toning Device, which is a handheld tool that is specifically designed to help improve facial contour, skin tone, and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. It features interchangeable attachments to offer a number of at-home spa treatments. What’s not to love?

3. Brightening Complex

Okay ladies, so Benson mentioned to Byrdie that if you’re suffering from hyperpigmentation, the Brightening Complex by Beauty RX is just the treatment you need. According to the product page, this serum is said to “Lighten stubborn brown spots, blotches, and hyperpigmentation to help achieve younger looking skin,” with a proprietary mix of acids including salicylic, lactic, and glycolic.

4. Foreo Luna 2

According to Benson in her article with Byrdie, if you’re looking for a new face brush, the Foreo Luna 2 may be your new best friend. This brush is made of silicone and is designed to minimize the appearance of blemishes and address aging concerns. One side of the brush is made to target blemishes by gently exfoliating dead skin cells, and the other is made to massage the skin, visibly reducing fine lines around the eyes and mouth.

5. PMD Personal Microderm pro

Last, but not least, Benson suggested Byrdie the PMD Personal Microderm Pro, which is the at-home alternative to those expensive microdermabrasion sessions you’d typically get in a spa. The tool uses a patented spinning disk technology with a vacuum suction that is made to brighten, smooth, and even skin tone and texture. It can also be used on your legs, arms, and anywhere else you desire smoother looking skin.
