Issa Rae stays winning.

Earlier today, Variety exclusively confirmed that the Insecure creator has re-upped her commitment with HBO, signing a new five-year overall deal that makes her Hoorae Media label in exclusive partnership with WarnerMedia.

While sources close to the signing suggested that the pact was valued at $40 million over five years, Rae herself declined to comment on the exact value of the deal.

Issa Rae's new deal is what's called a first-look deal. What that means is that anytime Rae — through her production company — creates a television show or film, WarnerMedia (through their brands such as Warner Bros. Pictures Group, New Line, and HBO Max) will have the right to take the "first look" at it to see if they want it or not. On the off-chance that these brands don't want to work with Rae's produced content, for whatever reason, they then must formally state as much in writing before she takes it to another company.

"It’s really exciting to have that flexibility and just deepen the relationship that we already have,” Issa Rae said to Variety. “Hoorae already had at least 15 projects in various stages of development with them, so we’d been working with them on the drama side, the unscripted side, and the documentaries side for a couple of years now.”
