We all have those social media accounts that truly seem to speak to us on any given day. Whether we need a good laugh, want the tea or just simply need to be reminded of our goodness, when done right, social media can be a place that delivers. One account that seems to really get it is We The Urban. The community boasts 4.3 million followers and provides daily inspiration, vibes and right on time reminders through the lens of all things Black.
Founded by Willie Green, We The Urban doubles as an online publication featuring everyone from Ryan Destiny to Laverne Cox and it seems poised to continue its growth. Victoria’s Secret x PINK has announced a collaboration with the brand for its Use Your Power To Empower Campaign which acknowledges and celebrates the Black Community and the essential allyship for driving meaningful change. PINK collaborated with We The Urban on an exclusive gender-free one size tee that features the raised fist – a universal symbol of solidarity – along with messages of empowerment and positive change.
The campaign was captured by Black photographer, Brandon Hicks, and features a diverse group of LGBTQIA+ Black actors, models, creatives, activists and allies, including PINK associates and PINK Campus Reps. About the campaign, Greene had this to say, “We all have a responsibility to use our power to empower others, to use our privilege to enfranchise the disenfranchised, to show compassion and kindness to others. I hope the messages you see throughout this campaign inspires you to reflect on the many ways you can show up for the Black community, this month and well beyond it.” In a behind the scenes video for the collaboration, Greene and other prominent voices in the community speak on the importance of being seen and showing up for one another. “As a person who may be categorized as marginalized, your existence is very powerful. It is through the struggle of my Black experience that I have garnered this great sense of pride”, said model, actress and activist Gia Love. The shirt, which was created specifically for Black History Month is not just a call of action for Black and Brown people but for everyone. “We all have a personal power. I implore everyone to use it, I think that’s how we change culture”, Willie Greene says.
