Mattel recently released a special edition Barbie doll to celebrate the legacy of Aaliyah on what would have been her birthday. This tribute has already captivated fans, with pre-orders selling out in record time.
Aaliyah, known for her timeless hits like "Are You That Somebody" and "Rock The Boat," became a household name in the 1990s.
With three American Music Awards and five Grammy nominations, she left an indelible mark on music before she passed away in 2001.
The Barbie Design team collaborated with Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, to create a doll that truly honors her essence.
According to her brother, she would spend hours creating performances with her dolls, showcasing her passion for music and creativity.
"I can...remember my sister playing with her favorite Barbie dolls for hours when we were kids," said Haughton.
"It's clear to me now that she was imagining dreams that would eventually become reality when she embarked on a career in entertainment..."
The doll’s outfit, a black leather moto-style ensemble, pays homage to Aaliyah’s iconic look from the "One In A Million" music video.
This doll is part of Barbie’s Music Collector Series, which has celebrated other legends such as Tina Turner, Stevie Nicks and Gloria Estefan.
In a statement, Krista Berger, Mattel’s svp of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls, hopes the Aaliyah Barbie inspires fans to embrace their talents and strive for greatness.
Couldn’t snag a pre-order? Don’t worry! The Aaliyah Barbie doll will hit Target stores on Jan. 26!
