This list features movies you can show your kids to empower and inspire them. They center Black leads who show future generations that they can do anything.

Build Presents Janelle Monae

Hidden Figures is a film about the Black women mathematicians behind NASA’s space missions. It makes for a great opportunity to show your kids how important Black women’s contributions are to the world.

'Hidden Figures' (2016, PG)  

This film follows a Black family in the Civil Rights era who decide to take a road trip to Birmingham, AL. The movie includes lessons on standing up for what is right and building strong family connections.

'The Watsons Go to Birmingham' (2013, PG)

This Disney film tells the story of 6-year-old Ruby Bridges who integrated an all-white school. It's a powerful story that can teach children about resilience and tolerance.

'Ruby Bridges' (1998, TV-PG)  

Remember the Titans is an uplifting story (based on real events) about a Black football coach who must unite a newly-integrated high school football team in the 1970s.

Our Friend, Martin makes for a fun way for children to learn about the revered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It follows two kids who time-travel through different parts of MLK’s life.

This film follows two young Black girls who are inspired to participate in the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march after watching MLK give a speech, portraying their bravery through injustice.

'Selma, Lord, Selma' (1999, TV-PG)

Akeelah and the Bee encourages perseverance and the power of education for Black children through the story of a young spelling champion.

'Akeelah and the Bee' (2006, PG)

This retelling of the classic Disney princess story can inspire children through representation this BHM as it stars a Black woman (Brandy) as Cinderella, along with a very diverse cast.

'Cinderella' (1997, G)

Hair Love is an Oscar-winning animated short film about a Black father who attempts to learn how to do his daughter's curly hair for the first time.

In this Netflix comedy special, Kevin Hart presents the stories of unsung pioneers and heroes in Black history in an engaging way that is informative and funny for all ages.
