10 Inspiring Black Women in Business

Feb. 15 was National Black Girl Magic Day – a time dedicated to celebrating Black women and girls while recognizing their strength, resilience, beauty and brilliance.

The term "Black Girl Magic" was popularized by CaShawn Thompson in 2013 as a way to highlight the accomplishments and perseverance of Black women.

In honor of National Black Girl Magic Day and this year’s Black History Month theme, “African Americans and Labor,” here are some entrepreneurs to celebrate.  

Howroyd is the Founder & CEO of ActOne Group, a global workforce solutions company. She became the first Black woman to run a billion-dollar company in the U.S.

Janice Bryant Howroyd

Price created the successful natural haircare brand, Carol’s Daughter, from her kitchen. Her company (named after Price’s mother) is thriving after selling to L’Oréal while keeping its original mission alive.

Lisa Price

Marketing executive & former Netflix CMO, Saint John is a powerhouse in corporate leadership. She's worked with Pepsi, Uber and Apple while advocating for Black women in business.

Bozoma Saint John

Melissa Butler started her vegan, cruelty-free lipstick brand called The Lip Bar from home. She went from being rejected on Shark Tank to selling her wide range of products in stores nationwide.

Cole is the founder of The Slutty Vegan, a plant-based fast-food restaurant that she opened in Atlanta in 2018. She has since opened over ten other locations around the US.

Aisha 'Pinky' Cole

Bracken-Ferguson is the founder of BrainTrust, helping Black entrepreneurs build brands through her Founders Studio. She has also written a book and runs a podcast centering on diversity in business.

Kendra Bracken-Ferguson

Hamilton went from being unhoused to founding a multi-million-dollar fund called Backstage Capital. Her venture capitalist company invests in Black, female and LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs.

Arlan Hamilton

Kane, a Ghanaian-American content creator, is the founder of Kin Apparel, a company that makes satin-lined hoodies, hats, hooded dresses and more designed to protect natural hair.

Philomina Kane

Manager created Black Girl Vitamins to target those seeking supplements by and for Black women after discovering she was vitamin D deficient in 2021.

Maxine Manager

Black Girl Sunscreen was created by Lundy to cater to Black women’s skin. It provides proper UV protection and doesn't leave an unflattering white cast behind.
