Bubble Braids With Short Hair: A Black Girl's Guide

By leah jones

Bubble braids are a simple style that can be done on many hair types and textures. You can even achieve this look with short hair!

Technically, bubble braids are not actually braids but instead are many small ponytails with multiple elastic bands tied around them to give the hair a puffy, braided look.

This style elevates a simple ponytail by giving it extra dimension and flair. It’s a playful look that is adorable for anyone, from kids to adults.

They can be an easy, casual look, but you can also dress up or personalize bubble braids, especially with beads, clips, colorful hair bands and other accessories.

This style is often done on natural hair using hair extensions, however it can be done on short hair by following these steps.

Part your hair as desired (either down the middle or to the side).

Step One: Part Hair

Gather a small section of hair and apply leave-in conditioner, styling cream and/or gel. Secure the section into a ponytail with an elastic band at the top.

Step Two: Create Pony Tails

Repeat this step until all of your hair is sectioned off. If you want many small bubble braids, create more ponytails in thinner sections.

Place more elastic bands about an inch apart down the length of each ponytail. If you want larger bubbles, use less elastic bands and space them out further and vice versa if you want more.

Step Three: Apply Elastic Bands

To create the bubbles, gently pull on/puff out both sides of the hair between the elastic bands. The more hair you pull out from the bands, the larger the bubbles will look.

Step Four: Create Bubbles

Use a holding spray and dry the hair to lock the style into place.

Step Five: Secure

Protect your hair by not tying it too tightly and using soft elastic bands. Also, do not pull the hair too hard or sparsely, especially if you have thin/fine hair.
