Breaking Down Doja Cat's Met Gala Statement

By Dezimey Kum

Doja Cat is known for her fearless approach to fashion, often embracing unconventional styles that challenge norms and spark conversation.

At the 2023 Met Gala, Doja honored Karl Lagerfeld's legacy, by embodying his cat Choupette in a white-and-silver Oscar de la Renta dress.

Doja Cat made a striking impression at the 2024 Met Gala wearing a floor-length, wet T-shirt gown that combined symbolism and simplicity.

Breaking Tradition

'The Garden of Time' was this year's theme, drawn from the same-titled short tale by J.G. Ballard. Therefore, consider classic and timeless clothing that will never go out of style.

While some may have found her look off-theme, Doja Cat had a deeper meaning behind her attire choice.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet, Doja explained the inspiration behind her Met look.

"I know that people are going to do flowers, but my flower of choice is the most-used flower. And it's cotton," she said. "...a white T-shirt is timeless."

Doja also disclosed the method used to make the T-shirt appear damp. "I'm not supposed to give the secret, but it's hair gel."

Doja and Vetements creative director, Guram Gvasalia, challenged red carpet norms with their bold and daring fashion collaboration.

Doja embraces individuality, emphasizing that she dislikes blending in and prefers making a statement.

With her fearless attitude and boundary-pushing style, Doja Cat solidifies her place as a fashion maverick at the Met Gala and beyond.
