Bounce Back: Hair Masks That Hydrate and Define Curls

By Emma hynes

Curly hair is beautiful, bold and full of personality – but it also needs a little extra TLC to stay healthy and defined. Between dryness, frizz and breakage, curls can face a lot of challenges.

That’s where hair masks come in. These deep-conditioning treatments are like a spa day for your strands, helping to restore moisture and strengthen your hair.

When choosing a store-bought hair mask for curly hair, look for deeply moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil and aloe vera to combat dryness. Opt for products labeled as deep conditioning, curl-friendly or Curly Girl Method.

Homemade hair masks offer a natural, customizable way to care for curly hair. They’re free from harsh chemicals found in many store-bought products and allow you to tailor ingredients to your specific needs.

Homemade Hair Mask

1/2 ripe avocado 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp plain yogurt or aloe vera essential oils for scent (optional)

Ingredients

Mash the avocado until smooth (no chunks). Mix in the coconut oil, honey and yogurt/aloe until well blended. Apply to damp, clean hair, focusing on mid-lengths to ends.

Cover hair with a shower cap and let sit for 20-30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and follow with a light shampoo.

For best results, use once a week. To deep-condition, apply heat using a warm towel or a heat cap.
