Make Your Own Bucket Hat: A Fun and Easy Sewing Project

By emma hynes

Whether you’re looking for the perfect summer accessory, a unique statement piece or a fun DIY project, sewing a bucket hat is easier than you think!

In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know, from choosing the right fabric to sewing crisp seams, so you can craft a bucket hat that’s as unique as you are.

Fabric (cotton, denim, canvas or any sturdy option) Lining fabric (optional, for a reversible hat) Interfacing (optional, for structure)

Materials

Sewing machine and thread Scissors or rotary cutter Pins or clips Measuring tape or ruler Iron and ironing board

Materials

You’ll need to cut out three pieces from both your main fabric and lining. The Brim (two identical donut-shaped pieces), the crown (top circle, one piece) and the side band (two pieces).

Cut Fabric

If using interfacing, cut and fuse it to the wrong side of the main fabric pieces for extra structure. "Wrong side" refers to the side of the fabric that will be facing the inside the garment.

Sew the two side band pieces together along the short edges to create a loop. Press the seams open with an iron.

Sew the Side Band

Pin the circular crown piece to the top of the side band, right sides together. Sew all the way around carefully. Clip small notches around the seam allowance to help the fabric lay flat.

Attach the Crown

Place the two brim pieces right sides together and sew around the outer edge. Turn the brim right side out and press flat. Topstitch along the edge for a professional finish.

Sew the Brim

Pin the inner edge of the brim to the bottom of the side band, right sides together. Sew all the way around, making sure there are no puckers.

Attach the Brim

This step is optional. Place the lining inside the main hat, wrong sides together. Sew a final topstitch around the brim to secure everything.

Add Your Lining

Press the seams for a neat finish. And finally add any decorative stitching or embellishments you like.
