You can still make a perfectly good icing without powdered sugar. And while simpler recipes require fewer ingredients, this one doesn't skip on the taste.
There are many ways to sweeten and thicken an icing without powdered sugar. This combination of ingredients gives you a delicious icing for baked goods.
Part of the allure of powdered sugar in icing is its consistency. However, by throwing granulated sugar into a blender and mixing it until it's fine, you can achieve a similar texture.
1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/4 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of salt
Combine the granulated sugar and milk in a saucepan and heat on low until fully dissolved. Allow to cool completely before beating sugar until it's soft.
If the icing is too thick, add more milk; a tablespoon at a time is recommended. To thicken, chill the icing for 10-15 minutes.
You can make the icing your own by adding crunchy toppings like pretzels, nut, or whatever feels most cohesive with your baked goods.
Another way to make it your own, specifically for tang, is to add lemon or lime juice with a touch of 7-Up. For spice, consider adding cinnamon or nutmeg to your icing mixture.
Transfer your mixture from the bowl to a piping bag. You can use a decorative tip to change the appearance, or try a spatula for a smooth result.
Place the icing in an airtight container and refrigerate it. When you're ready to use it, let it come to room temperature and then stir. It will last in the fridge for a week.
