Are Lash Extensions Right for You? Consider the Pros and Cons

By leah jones

False eyelashes have long been a beauty staple, but eyelash extensions are becoming an increasingly popular, semi-permanent solution.

This beauty trend can yield great results – but the process may not be for everyone. Here are the main pros and cons of lash extensions to help you decide if it's time to book an appointment.

Extensions can save you time! You don’t have to apply mascara or use an eyelash curler to achieve long and full-looking lashes.

Pro: Time-Saving

You can personalize eyelash extensions to the length, curl and thickness of your choice.

Pro: Customizable

They last about six weeks (when properly taken care of) before they fall out naturally. Some prefer this over false eyelashes that require constant reapplication.

Pro: Long-Lasting

Eyelash extensions are more resistant to wear and water. After a day or two, you can swim, shower and sweat without worry.

Pro: Water Resistant

They are more natural looking as they are applied to your actual lashes individually and can make you feel even more confident.

Pro: Natural Looking

You risk getting infections from bacteria if your extensions aren’t cleaned consistently with oil-free eyelash serum. It is also important to not pull them out or rub your eyes.

Con: Require Maintenance

Not going to a trained eyelash technician could result in damage to the eyeball or eyelid from the use of unsanitary tools or improper/reckless application.

Con: Must Be Professionally Done

You risk scratches, irritation and/or infection to the eye if the eyelash extensions or adhesive enter the eye. Additionally, allergic reactions on the eyelids from the adhesive are uncommon but possible.

Con: Can Potentially Be Harmful to the Eye

Heavy extensions can tug on the hair follicles of the natural eyelashes. This causes breakage when worn too frequently without breaks.

Con: Can Cause Eyelash Breakage

On average, eyelash extensions are costly at about $100-$300 for a full set. 2-4 week maintenance appointments ($50-$100) are necessary for health and appearance.

Con: Expensive

Only opt for eyelash extensions over false eyelashes if you are committed to the maintenance and do not mind the investment. If you are hesitant about either, they probably aren’t for you.
