Fuel Your Book Club Discussions With These Thoughtful Questions

By Emma Hynes

Book clubs are all about diving deeper into the stories we read, exploring characters, themes and ideas from new perspectives. But sometimes, starting the conversation can be the hardest part.

To ensure your book club makes the most of every discussion, we've curated a selection of thought-provoking questions designed to spark conversations.

What was the central theme of the book, and how did it resonate with you?

If you're talking about a specific moment, you can try something like, "How would you have handled this situation more effectively?"

What song or songs would you put on the soundtrack associated with this book?

Did the author use any literary devices (metaphor, symbolism, foreshadowing, etc.) that stood out to you?

If this was a male author writing about women, or a female author writing about men, you can ask if it felt authentic.

Which character did you relate to the most, and why?

What was your favorite quote, or what quote stood out to you the most?

If the story ends on an ambiguous note, you can ask your group to share their interpretations of what they believe truly happened.

How do you see the book's title relating to the story? Why do you think it was chosen?

How did the author's writing style affect your reading experience? Was it easy to follow, or did it challenge you?

What social, political or cultural issues were explored in the book, and how are they relevant to today's world?
