Essence Festival of Culture 2023 has officially kicked off in New Orleans bringing some of music’s most beloved Black women artists to the city.

For its 29th anniversary, Essence is helping ring in the 50th Anniversary of hip hop, with each night of performances featuring some of hip hop’s greatest women performers.

Friday Lineup

Friday night is packed with some standout music acts — with Lauryn Hill headlining the night. Along with Hill, acts like Janelle Monae, Ari Lennox, and Tems will also be hitting the stage.

Saturday Lineup

Missy Elliott will be the headlining act on Saturday night. Joining her on Saturday night’s lineup is Jill Scott, Yo-Yo, Lady of Rage, Coco Jones, and Monica.

Sunday Lineup

Finally, on Sunday, Megan Thee Stallion will be the headliner. Sunday’s lineup also includes the iconic rap acts Eve, Salt-N-Pepa, Remy Ma, Trina, and Mia X. Muni Long and DJ Spinderella will also be a part of Sunday’s show

Making History

This year marks the first time in the festival’s history that three Black women emcees are headlining each night of the evening concerts.

“That’s representative of the growth and the direction we’re taking the event. It’s important to have the attention of the audience we’re serving,” said Hakeem Holmes, vice president of the festival, in an interview with the AP. “We’re attracting younger generations now so we’ve had to grow. It’s exciting that throughout out each night we’ll feature younger artists alongside the legends.”

Essence teased the festival with the release of its July/August cover featuring Missy Elliott. And Monica was featured on its special digital cover for the festival.

The festival runs through July 3, with The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center housing the festival’s workshops, vendor market, and other events. The nightly festival shows will be held at the Superdome.
