Concealers for acne-prone melanin-rich skin cover annoying pimples while working with your complexion. “Given that the purpose of concealer is to cover existing pimples, the last thing you want is for the concealer itself to contribute to the problem,” board-certified dermatologist Patricia Oyetakin, MD FAAD, told 21Ninety. So, you’ll want to ensure that the concealer you choose won’t cause you to break out more.

How To Find the Best Concealers for Acne-Prone Melanin-Rich Skin

Dr. Oyetakin mentioned several things to remember when shopping for a concealer that will work well with acne-prone melanin-rich skin. “By following these steps and making informed choices, you can find a concealer that not only provides the coverage you desire but also helps maintain your skin’s health and clarity,” the board-certified dermatologist explained.

First, take note of your skin type and concerns – including acne. “Understanding your skin’s unique needs will guide your concealer choice,” Dr. Oyetakin stated. That said, if you think you’ve tried every concealer, consider color correcting. Have noticeable redness with your acne? Reach for a green concealer. But, if dark spots are your nemesis, reach for an orange, peach, or red color-correcting concealer.

Then, consider which texture will work best with your skin type. According to Dr. Oyetakin, oily to normal skin types – including combination – should try a liquid concealer. On the flip side, if you have normal to dry skin, reach for a cream concealer.
Next, look at the concealer formula for products labeled as non-comedogenic. The doctor noted that non-comedogenic products are made not to clog your pores or make you breakout more than you naturally do. “Common [pore-clogging] ingredients to avoid include formaldehyde, silicone, diethanolamine, fragrance, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, petrolatum, and methyl and propyl parabens,” the dermatologist warned.

Dr. Oyetakin mentioned to consult your medical professional if you ever have additional questions about your skin and what ingredients you might be irritating.

How to Apply Concealer on Acne-Prone Melanin-Rich Skin

After you’ve picked the right product, you’ll need to apply it correctly for the best results.” To ensure a flawless application, always begin with a clean and well-moisturized face,” Nako Cosmetics founder Sophia Tang, told 21Ninety.

Then, the makeup expert recommended priming your skin with a trustworthy primer. A primer levels the skin and creates a barrier between the makeup and the depths of your pores. That barrier can prevent breakouts.

Once your skin is primed and ready, you’ll follow one of two application methods. If using a color correcting concealer, apply the appropriate color corrector first. Let it set. Then, apply a concealer that matches your skin over the top.

If you’re using a concealer, Tang recommended applying the concealer with a fine brush on the acne spots. Then, blend the edges using a damp beauty sponge for the most effective result.

No matter which method you choose, Tang mentioned that setting your makeup will lengthen the wear-time of your overall look.
