There are different kinks, such as dominance and submission, bondage and sadomasochism. However, there may be some unusual kinks that you don’t know. If you thought of it, there’s more than likely a kink for that.
“A kink is something that a person really enjoys that does not fit inside of the ‘vanilla’ concept of what sex looks like; however, it is not a requirement for pleasure to exist,” said Bridgetta Giles, a sexologist. “A fetish is something that a person really enjoys that may fall outside of the concept of ‘vanilla’ and must be present for the person to feel pleasure [and] be aroused truly.”
While some might find these practices “weird,” it’s essential to approach them without judgment and recognize the beauty of individual expression.
Destigmatizing Kinks
Specific kinks unusual are often subjective and depends on societal norms. However, these preferences offers a unique glimpse into human desire.
“For society to work towards destigmatizing kinks and take a more sex-positive approach, [society] would [need] to prioritize sex education that is comprehensive, pleasure inclusive, gender and relationship expansive,” she said. “We need to be curious about how others experience love and pleasure and respect the differences.”
She also added that people must feel safe and supported. These safe spaces and normalized conversations will allow the minds of the community to expand.
Giles noted that although some of these kinks may seem unusual, it is beneficial to explore and understand your own set of sexual values. “Knowing your personal boundaries and preferences can contribute to more aligned sexual experiences and more meaningful conversations with partners,” she stated.
What Are Some Unusual Kinks?
Orgasm Denial
Orgasm denial, also known as erotic sexual denial, involves intentionally delaying or withholding orgasm during sexual activities.
“It is a form of play that is popular in BDSM play scenarios,” Giles shared. “It is an amazing way for people to understand that sex does not have to result in orgasm to be an intense and pleasurable experience.”
Auralism
Auralism is the erotic fascination with sounds and noises.
“This [kink] includes finding immense pleasure in the sounds of a partner moaning, the sounds of the crack of a whip or verbal communication between partners during pleasure experiences,” she said.
Ozolagnia
Ozolagnia refers to arousal derived from various odors or scents not associated with the body. Unlike typical turn-ons, this kink involves a deep appreciation for specific smells that evoke intense sexual responses. Giles revealed that something as simple as a vanilla scent could turn an individual on.
Olfactophilia
Olfactophilia involves a sexual attraction to body odors.
“I always think of the men with beards that love to go down on women and leave the ‘juices’ on their mustaches and beards so that they can smell the scent throughout the day,” Giles explained.
Trycophilia
Trycophilia is the arousal sparked by hair or specific hairstyles.
“Individuals may find enjoyment and pleasure in activities involving hair, whether it’s their own hair, a partner’s hair or even specific hairstyles and grooming practices,” Giles said.
Flatulophilia
Flatulophilia involves finding sexual arousal in flatulence. According to the sexologist, it is also referred to as fart fetishism or eproctophilia. While it may raise eyebrows, individuals with this kink appreciate the intimate, humorous and unfiltered aspects of bodily functions.
Haptephilia
Haptephilia revolves around the love of touch, and it isn’t limited to erogenous zones. For those with this kink, the sensation of physical contact is an essential element of arousal. “Someone who is a haptephile will become aroused with an endearing touch on the shoulder or the knee or even a hug,” she said.
