AI has infiltrated every corner of our lives. From virtual assistants to personalized shopping recommendations, AI is everywhere. However, the beauty space seems a bit untouched by this technological wave. Curious to see how AI could enhance my beauty routine, I decided to try out the AI makeup app, Glam Up. Here’s how it went.

Hesitations and First Impressions

I was hesitant at first, knowing that AI sometimes struggles with Black skin tones. Despite my reservations, I downloaded Glam Up and found the interface user-friendly. The app asked about my beauty goals, skin concerns, age, and the types of products I was interested in.

Then came a slight hiccup: the app required a payment. While I rarely pay for apps, a deal of $4.49 for a week’s use, including four scans, seemed reasonable.

Exploring the Features

Upon logging in, I was presented with four features: Glow Up Guide, Bare Face Analysis, Makeup Match, and Makeup Analysis.

Glow Up Guide

My first choice. After scanning my face, it showed a “natural makeup look.” Unfortunately, it felt more like a Facetune job with blurred skin and cartoonish lashes. Disappointed, I quickly moved on.

Bare Face Analysis

This feature redeemed the app. It scanned my face and provided details like hair color, skin tone, eye color, eye shape, face shape, and undertone. The app then recommended various makeup products with detailed explanations, pros and cons, and prices. From lipsticks to foundations, each category had multiple suggestions.

Makeup Match

I uploaded a look from a white makeup influencer to see how it would translate to my skin. While it didn’t show the finished look on my skin, it provided product recommendations and application tips. I wished for more detailed instructions, especially for eyeshadow.

Makeup Analysis

For this, I uploaded a recent photo of myself with a natural makeup look that I wasn’t happy with. Despite my dissatisfaction with the makeup in the photo, the app deemed it perfect, which was a bit disappointing. I hoped for constructive feedback.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Glam Up has potential. I’d recommend it to those looking to refine their makeup routine, with a tip to take the best possible pictures for accurate scans. While some features need improvement, it’s a step toward merging beauty and AI. Give it a try and see how it enhances your makeup game!
