Amber Riley is opening up about the important life lessons she learned while navigating a relationship she realized was no longer healthy for her.

The singer and actress got candid with xoNecole about her decision to part ways with her ex-fiancé Desean Black in 2022 following their 2020 engagement.

In her digital cover story, Riley shared that she ultimately decided to choose herself. She did so despite the pressure to meet public expectations of her relationship.

“When it was good, it was good,” she said. “When it was bad, it was terrible, hunny.”

She continued that she realized she didn’t owe anyone a happily ever after.

“You find happiness and enjoy it and work through it,” Riley said.

Riley credits her inner strength with helping her navigate the healing she has reached as she’s uncovered what matters most to her.

“I think one of my superpowers is resilience because, at the end of the day, I’m going to kick, scream, cry, cuss, be mad and disappointed, but I’m going to get up and risk having to deal with it all again. It’s worth it for the happy moments,” she said.

She also admitted that the split from Black did not remove her trust in finding her person.

“The breakup was never going to stop me from finding love. Or at least trying,” she said.

Riley has since found a new flame as she celebrates a new era of happiness. Riley went public with her new boyfriend on Valentine’s Day 2023, sharing a post dedicated to him.

“I am becoming better, so I can love you the way you love me. You’re the best person I know. Happy Love Day my VALENTINE,” she captioned the sweet message.
