Charity Lawson’s journey on “The Bachelorette” came to a fairytale ending when Dotun Olubeko got down on one knee during the show’s dramatic finale. Since then, the couple’s love story has continued to unfold in the public eye, offering fans a glimpse into their beautiful connection, both on and off-screen.

The Power of Personal Growth for Lawson and Olubeko

After a year of being engaged, Olubeko opened to 21Ninety about the personal growth he’s experienced since taking that big step.

“I think I’ve learned more that I probably have more work to do than I thought,” he admitted.

Despite entering the relationship feeling prepared after previous serious relationships, Dotun quickly realized that love is an ever-evolving journey.

“There’s personal work and relationship growth, and that’s a whole different skill set,” he shared.

The experience has pushed him to continue improving, not just as an individual but within the relationship itself.

“It makes you better and more well-rounded,” he said, highlighting that love and personal development go hand in hand.

Olubeko and Lawson’s engagement holds even greater significance as they are the first Black couple to get engaged on “The Bachelorette.” Reflecting on the impact of their love story, Olubeko expressed both gratitude and responsibility.

“It’s a big deal,” he said about the importance of positive representation. “Me and Charity have done a decent job of having a positive representation of Black love, and that’s really important.”

He emphasized that their bond goes beyond their race, but he also recognized the beauty and power in representing Black love on such a public stage.

“We were just two souls who came together, but having that extra layer of being Black and showing the world what we can do means the world to us,” he said.

Advice for Newly Engaged Couples

As someone who has successfully navigated the first year of engagement, Olubeko shared valuable advice for other couples embarking on this journey.

“Be who you are, not who you think they want you to be,” he advised.

Authenticity, he explained, is key to a successful relationship.

“It’s important to acknowledge where you want to go but also understand where you are now,” he shared.

By being genuine with your partner, Olubeko believes that “Love will always prevail.”
