If you are tired of risking a muscle cramp when you’re trying to brush your teeth, then turn to an electric toothbrush. These powered tools make cleaning your teeth easier.
“It oscillates or vibrates to take off the plaque layer and clean your teeth,” dentist and CEO of Oral Genome Tina Saw told 21Ninety.
What is an Electric Toothbrush?
Electric toothbrushes put in all the effort you need to keep your teeth clean. Saw said that there are two main types of electric toothbrushes on the market: oscillating and sonic.
“Oscillating electric toothbrushes spin and move similar to the way your dentist and/or dental hygienist would polish your teeth,” the dentist said. “Sonic electric toothbrushes vibrate and shake off plaque and tartar.”
Dr. Saw mentioned that while a manual toothbrush can still offer a great clean, you’d have to be very careful to make sure that you’re getting to the surface of every tooth.
“Remember that selecting the right electric toothbrush depends on your specific needs, references and budget,” general practitioner Blen Tesfu told 21Ninety.
How to Buy the Best Electric Toothbrush
With so many options to choose from, Tesfu noted the top three things to look for in an electric toothbrush no matter your budget.
Tesfu advises everyone to take note of how the toothbrush cleans. She suggests looking for one that “utilizes effective cleaning technology, such as oscillating-rotating, sonic or ultrasonic vibrations.”
The next thing everyone should look out for is if the brush head works with your mouth. If it’s too big for your teeth or your mouth you could miss out on an efficient clean. Tesfu said that you should “opt for brush heads with soft, rounded bristles that can reach all areas of your mouth comfortably.”
Tesfu said that the final thing that people should look for in an electric toothbrush are two stand-out features: a timer and a pressure sensor. The timer ensures that you’re brushing for the recommended two minutes, while the pressure sensor alerts you if you’re applying too much pressure, which can lead to gum irritation or damage.
