As you go through your daily moisturizing routine, don’t forget about your feet. Feet need just as much moisture, if not more, as the rest of your body.

“It is important for people to use foot creams because they help to moisturize and nourish the skin on the feet,” podiatrist Suzanne Fuchs told 21Ninety.

Downsides of not using foot cream

Our feet are constantly exposed to the elements, especially if they’re in a pair of sandals. Walking, exercising, and even the weather are factors that have an impact on the health of our feet, according to Dr. Fuchs.

If you’re not giving your feet enough moisture, it can lead to your heels drying out and cracking.

“Walking around with cracked heels can lead to discomfort, pain, and even infections, especially if sand or other debris gets into the cracks,” Dr. Fuchs noted.

Even if your heels don’t crack, board-certified dermatologist Anna Chacon told 21Ninety creams can help yu avoid athlete’s foot.

How to find the best foot cream

In order to keep your feet happy, soft, and smooth reach for a good quality foot cream.

“Foot creams typically have a waxy, buttery feel, similar to the combination of cocoa or shea butter with thick cream. It is significantly heavier than the normal hand cream,” Dr. Chacon explained.

So, when you’re shopping for a healing foot cream follow Dr. Chacon recommends of looking for humectant and occlusive ingredients. According to Chacon, humectants are compounds that attract water into the skin. Occlusive ingredients seal in additional ingredients and moisture.

“These ingredients help to soften and smooth the skin, while also providing a protective barrier against further damage,” Dr. Fuchs added.

Examples of humectants include urea, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid. Meanwhile, shea butter, and coconut oil are common occlusives.

No matter what foot cream you choose, both experts say something is better than nothing.

“By incorporating foot creams into a daily foot care routine, individuals can enjoy healthier, smoother, and more comfortable feet,” Dr. Fuchs concluded.
