Coffee is the energy-igniting best friend that most people reach for in the morning. The main downside is that coffee can put a lot of people on a mood rollercoaster.

One moment you feel the spark in your body to tackle any task that comes your way. Then, a few hours later, you crash so hard that it’s nap time before 3pm.

If this sounds like your daily struggle, it’s time to try mushroom coffee.

What is mushroom coffee?

“Mushroom coffee is a type of coffee that has powdered medicinal mushrooms like chaga, reishi, or lion’s mane mixed into it during brewing,” Tom Saxon told 21Ninety. The 10-year coffee industry veteran founded Batch Coffee Club.

In general, the drink is made by adding powdered or dried mushrooms into powdered coffee or blending them together.

“[It’s] basically coffee with mushroom extracts,” registered dietician nutritionist and self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur, Amy S. Margulies, RD, CDCES, LDN, NBC-HWC told 21Ninety.

Benefits of drinking mushroom coffee

“For me the reason why anybody would opt for mushroom coffee is the health benefits,” Saxon said. “It is believed to have benefits such as immune boosting and anti-inflammatory properties.”

Overall, mushroom coffee offers an energy boost without the feeling of crashing down hours later, according to Margulies. She also mentioned it’s less harsh on your stomach than regular coffee. It supports digestion, delivers antioxidants to your body, can help decrease inflammation, and might even help you sleep better.

Additional benefits

According to the dietician, the additional benefits of mushroom coffee vary depending on which mushrooms are included in the coffee blend.

Margulies explained that lion’s mane mushrooms support healthy cognitive function. Chaga mushrooms support gut and heart health, while reishi mushrooms also support the heart.

“Cordyceps sinensis mushroom supports healthy heart functioning,” the nutritionist stated.

Margulies also highlights the lower levels of caffeine is an important benefit.

“There is usually 40 mg of caffeine at the most in mushroom coffees, which is half of the regular coffee but might be more than you bargained for if looking for the least amount of caffeine,” she said.
