Here are a few organizations dedicated to making the world a better place through their work.
Non-Profits to Look Out For
Black Girls CODE
Founded by Kimberly Bryant in 2011, Black Girls CODE is a groundbreaking nonprofit organization dedicated to introducing young girls of color to the world of technology and computer programming. Recognizing the underrepresentation of Black women in STEM fields, Bryant has been on a mission to provide girls with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in the digital age. Black Girls CODE offers workshops, after-school programs, and summer camps, inspiring the next generation of tech-savvy leaders.
The Loveland Foundation
Rachel Cargle, a renowned activist and academic, founded The Loveland Foundation in 2018. Its purpose is to provide mental health support and therapy to Black women and girls. The foundation works to make mental health resources more accessible, offering therapy sessions, fellowships, and programs that prioritize the mental well-being of Black women. Through their initiatives, The Loveland Foundation is breaking down barriers and promoting healing within the black community.
Essie Justice Group
Gina Clayton-Johnson established the Essie Justice Group in 2014. The organization addresses the impact of mass incarceration on women. It provides a platform for women with incarcerated loved ones to share their experiences and advocate for change. Through campaigns, support groups, and policy initiatives, Essie Justice Group is working towards a more just and equitable criminal justice system.
Black Women’s Blueprint
Farah Tanis co-founded Black Women’s Blueprint in 2008. The organization was made to address the intersecting forms of violence experienced by Black women. This nonprofit organization engages in advocacy, research, and community-building to address issues such as sexual assault, domestic violence, and reproductive justice. Through their work, Black Women’s Blueprint strives to create a world where black women and girls can live free from violence and oppression.
#BlackLivesMatter Global Network Foundation
The #BlackLivesMatter movement, born out of a hashtag in 2013, became a global phenomenon advocating for racial justice and equality. Co-founders Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi established the #BlackLivesMatter Global Network Foundation to amplify the voices of black communities and fight against systemic racism. The foundation supports various initiatives, including policy advocacy, community organizing, and educational programs, with the ultimate goal of dismantling racial injustice.
