In order to properly care for eczema-prone skin, it’s important to find a body wash that is moisturizing, soothing and gentle. Eczema-prone skin has a weakened barrier that makes it more susceptible to irritation.

“Wrong body washes can strip the skin of its natural oils, disrupt its barrier function and exacerbate inflammation, leading to eczema flare-ups,” said Alexis Pfropper, a licensed esthetician.

What Product to Avoid if You Have Eczema?

Eczema-prone skin should avoid products with ingredients that can irritate and dry-out skin, according to surgeon Bart Kachniarz. Ingredients to avoid include sulfates, fragrances, alcohol, soaps with high pH and dyes.

“Additionally, consumers should avoid overly abrasive exfoliating particles or rough textures that can aggravate eczema flare-ups,” Pfropper added.

Instead, those with ezcema-prone skin should shop for products that contain soothing ingredients. “Humectants, like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, and emollients, like ceramides and shea butter, can help hydrate and soothe the skin,” Kachniarz said.

He also listed colloidal oatmeal as another ingredient to look out for since it has anti-inflammatory and anti-itching properties.
