Castor oil has been the long-held secret of several health and beauty traditions, including moisturizing one’s hair, skin or gut (to increase movement regularity). In two of those cases, you would apply castor oil to the outside of the area or belly button, although when it comes to the gut, a spoonful of castor oil has done the trick of maintaining flow. So, what’s the most effective way to reap all of your castor oil benefits? Let’s get into it.

What is a Castor Oil Pack?

Castor oil “packing” is the act of soaking a cloth with castor oil and placing it on a part of the body for an extended period of time. In addition to moisturizing hair, skin and stomach, castor oil packs also detoxify the body, according to health experts. Medical research has not yet proven this attribute of the ancient practice; however, social media content with “castor oil” tags has gained millions of views.

As with any trend, it’s recommended that you consult with a medical professional before incorporating new remedies into your routine. However, if you are considering dipping your toe into the trend wave, here are some of the benefits shared by experts and confirmed by TikTokers.

The Benefits of Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs are said to alleviate any inflammation, whether on your upper or lower body. Most popularly placed on the abdomen area of the body, these packs are said to cleanse the liver while eliminating constipation and managing period cramps. It acts as a laxative and a detoxifier, pulling out whatever is causing a blockage or spasm. TikTokers have also confirmed that the castor oil packing helps to reduce bloating and alleviate the pain caused by fibroids. Once it starts working, not only will pain or bloating dissipate, but you’ll feel clear– in all aspects of the word.

Before diving into use, it is recommended that you patch test on your skin before experiencing any allergic reactions. People who are pregnant are also encouraged to skip this trend until after delivery. However, if it is safe for you to try it out, here’s how to make one yourself whether you’re at home or on the go.

How To Make A Castor Oil Pack

You’ll need castor oil, cloth, scissors, a plastic cover and a container of some kind. Once you have your supplies, cut the cloth into rectangular pieces big enough to cover the area of your body that needs detoxifying. Lay the pieces of cut cloth inside of your container and begin to pour the castor oil onto them. You want to soak the cloth, so you’ll need a good amount depending on the size of the bottle that you’re using. Once they’re soaked, place them onto the body and cover them with plastic. You can wrap the plastic around the area to prevent movement and the soaking of the castor oil through your clothing. Leave on the area for 30 minutes to an hour and no longer, to prevent overstimulation and/or injury.

While some who have tried the remedy have reported back with cramps, others have confirmed a cleansing experience. As a widely practiced natural remedy, we expect to see more content featuring castor oil packing and the ongoing list of benefits.
