Singer Chloe Bailey delivered a thrilling tribute to Tina Turner during her performance at CNN’s Juneteenth celebration. Bailey headlined the Tribute by singing Turner’s famous 1984 “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” Her performance attracted mixed reactions, with many stating that she wasn’t the right fit for the tribute.

The CNN event was billed as a celebration of global freedom. The event lineup had other artists such as Charlie Wilson, Miguel, Kirk Franklin, Nelly, SWV, Davido, Coi Leray, Jodeci among others.

One Tribute of Many

Since her passing, Tina Turner has been the source of many tributes aimed at honoring her inspiring life. Singers Lizzo and Beyoncé are some of the artists who have paid tribute to her while on their tours. Bailey’s latest rendition is a new addition to the roster. For her performance, the “Treat Me” singer opted for a shimmering, body suit and an afro wig. She stripped the song of some of its rock elements, leading listeners to a softer, more sensual version of the song. The performance was perfectly capped by Bailey’s raspy, honey-toned voice, giving the Grammy award-winning song a modern, more personalized twist.

Bailey’s performance has mostly been met with a warm reception from fans. However, some felt her rendition didn’t do justice to the song.

“As talented as Chloe is, she was not a good choice for this tribute & song. Her singing style & range just didn’t match the song. The music was too loud & it was times where it felt like she was intentionally trying to sex the song up. Simply put, this was not enjoyable for me,” one person on Twitter noted.

The Cover Queen

Aside from being featured in critically acclaimed television projects like “Swarm” and releasing a debut album, Chloe Bailey is also renowned for her covers. Bailey’s latest cover of “Bloody Samaritan” by Nigerian singer Ayra Starr blew up. It reminded people of her prowess at tapping into different genres.
