The beauty industry has gotten quite the face-lift over the past year, and we are hopeful these positive changes continue! One change that has recently surfaced is COVERGIRL’s announcement sharing that they are now a 100% cruelty-free brand!
According to a press release from their parent company, Coty, COVERGIRL is now the largest makeup brand to ever be awarded the Leaping Bunny Certification by Cruelty Free International. It has joined over 600 companies that are also making a pledge to test their products in a way that’s cruelty free. Many of these companies add the “Leaping Bunny” logo to their products to notify consumers of their practices.

“Being cruelty-free and achieving the Leaping Bunny certification for COVERGIRL is the right thing to do, at the right time, in the right way. Listening to our consumers, we started this journey with COVERGIRL to demonstrate our commitment to this issue by achieving such an ambitious certification at scale. This is consistent with our ambition of growing responsibly by championing open, inclusive and sustainable beauty,” says Camillo Pane, CEO of Coty.
In order to be considered for this particular certification, a company must meet certain criteria including the requirements to: “Apply a fixed cut-off date after which none of your products or ingredients are tested on animals; Establish procedures for verifying the strict implementation of your fixed cut-off date with product manufacturers and raw ingredients suppliers to monitor your supply chains; Adopt an animal testing policy verified by Cruelty Free International; and Allow independent audit to evidence compliance with Leaping Bunny criteria.”
Ukonwa Ojo, the Chief Marketing Officer of Coty Consumer Beauty, told Glamour this is a monumental moment for the household-name brand because the company had to undergo an extensive background check to even be considered, and although Coty has enforced policies against animal-testing for years, COVERGIRL looked to go above and beyond.
"No other certification program has the rigor that seeks to completely eliminate animal testing from a brand’s supply chain. To earn the Leaping Bunny certification for CoverGirl, we verified our internal standards and established protocols for our suppliers, underwent a rigorous audit of our supply chain and ingredients, and agreed to regular independent audits of the CoverGirl supply chain,” Ojo said, providing insight to the process.
