While coffee is known as the ultimate breakfast beverage, there’s something so cozy about sipping on a Cup o’ Joe after with dessert after dinner as well. All of that caffeine before bed isn’t great for your sleep however. That’s why decaf coffee is a great alternative. You get to have your evening brew with all the flavor and none of the jitters. Decaf coffee comes in all of the same forms as regular coffee including pods, ground coffee, whole beans, and even cold brew.

Regular Coffee’s Impact on Sleep

Yes, drinking regular caffeinated coffee close to bedtime has a negative impact on your sleep.

“A sleep molecule called adenosine must bind to a receptor in the brain to help you feel sleepy and initiate sleep,” neuroscientist and sleep expert at Wesper Chelsie Rohrscheib, Ph.D. told 21Ninety. “Caffeine prevents the binding of adenosine, keeping you awake and alert.”

Dr. Rohrscheib recommended avoiding caffeine at least six hours before you plan on going to bed.

“Besides coffee, many foods contain hidden caffeine, such as chocolate and dairy products,” the neuroscientist explained.

So, if you find that your usual cup of coffee before bed causes you to feel restless or wide-awake, opt for a decaf coffee. Or, have a conversation with your medical provider.
