When it comes to removing unwanted hair, the process is a painful one. Waxing, sugaring, and laser hair removal are a literal pain. But, have you ever tried epilating? “An epilator is a great tool for hair removal,” nurse and skin care expert, Christina DiFerdinando PhD, told 21Ninety. It’s a device that removes hair without the same level of pain that waxing often involves. There are epilators for the face and body.

An epilator is a device with rows of tiny tweezers that move at a fast speed to quickly pluck out multiple hairs at once. By focusing on the hairs, your skin isn’t involved in the hair removal process as much as other methods — that makes it less painful. To use an epilator, you just glide the device over the desired area and let the tool do the work.

Tips for Epilating: Pre- And Post-Use

“Proper skin preparation is a crucial step in ensuring a smooth and effective epilation process,” DiFerdinando explained. The first step is to gently exfoliate your skin the day before. According to the nurse’s advice, you’ll prevent ingrown hair by clearing your skin of dead skin cells.

Then, the day of, take a warm shower and dry your skin completely. “Any residue of oils or lotions should be avoided as they can hinder the epilator’s ability to effectively grab and remove hairs,” DiFerdinando noted. The warmth will help to open the hair follicles temporarily – that will make the process less painful.

Another important note is to take note of how long your hair is. Per the skin expert, if your hair is longer than a quarter of an inch. Longer hair can get tangled in the tweezers. Fortunately, some epilators come with trimmers attached so that you won’t need to reach for a different device.

After your session, apply an alcohol-free lotion or aloe vera to calm and hydrate your skin. DiFerdinando mentioned that the skin is more sensitive after epilating. So, to avoid irritation keep your skin hydrated and steer clear of products that can aggravate your skin – like overly scented products or items with a lot of alcohol on the epilated areas of the body.
