As the fall season ushers in, so does change. Whether changing your wardrobe, trying a new color, or preparing your home for the cooler months, this is the best time of the year to try something new. One of the most significant changes women experience is switching up their hair.

“Some women come to sit in my chair and choose to completely cut [their hair] off or go significantly shorter just because they wanted to do something different,” said hairstylist Keayoni Whittaker.

“Yes, you see the traditional colors of ginger and reds, but this fall, I am seeing a lot of requests for layered cuts and highlights,” Whittaker told 21Ninety.

Whittaker is a hairstylist at Sass n’ Class Salon of Beauty in El Cerrito, CA. The Bay Area stylist spoke with 21Ninety about fall hairstyle breakdowns and her favorite cuts for the season.

Fall Hairstyles

This fall season is all about the type of haircuts women request. Layered cuts, textured bobs, or bangs are all extremely popular right now.

“My clients are asking for layered cuts. Whether with their natural hair or sew-in, they want layers because it creates that volume and movement they’re looking for,” Whittaker said. “Another great [style request] is bangs. Bangs are a minor, yet big enough change to someone’s look.”

The Bay Area stylist noted that she also enjoys boho goddess braids.

“Boho goddess braids are a great protective style for all months. Many people think braids are just for the summer, while the cooler months are a chance to let your natural hair down. Typically, that is true, but these braids are also great for fall,” Whittaker continued.

Colors of the Season

One of the best parts about changing your hair during the fall is the variety of colors a person can experiment with. Fall hair colors evoke the season’s warmth and richness. Deep auburns, chestnut browns, and golden blondes dominate the palette. Subtle caramel highlights add depth to darker shades. The season’s hues lean towards cozy, earthy tones, reflecting the changing foliage and cooler temperatures.

“The biggest color clients have requested are different shades of browns, blondes, and darker variations of red,” Whittaker said. “Oh, also caramel highlights…women really love that color for highlights or just strips of color.”

But these warm, earthy tones are not the only color that women will experiment with. Surprisingly, some may reach for a pastel this fall.
