“Next, I must consider the diameter, length, and curl. This ensures clients receive the perfect lash extensions. I want my clients to be happy with their results, but we must also set realistic expectations,” she continued.

Before booking an appointment, your first step will always be to select a seasoned lash technician. Look for reviews, before-and-after photos, and credentials. A skilled technician will make your lashes look fantastic and ensure the health of your natural lashes.

Avoid Makeup Before Your Individual Lash Extensions Appointment
For the adhesive to bond correctly, your lashes must be completely free of residue. By keeping your lashes clean, you allow the technician to work more efficiently, ensuring the longevity of your extensions.
“Avoid using mascara and strip lash glue in the days leading up to your services. This will ensure the maximum amount of retention,” Whittaker said. “Also, your Lash tech will clean your lash line before applying for extensions. So all you need to do to prepare is make sure you have removed all make-up and lash glue if you wear strips.”
Steer Clear of Caffeine
It might seem odd, but avoiding caffeine the day of your lash appointment can make a difference. Caffeine can make your eyes twitchy, making the lash application process more challenging.
“A lot of clients do not realize how important this step is. Some [clients] are more sensitive to caffeine…and I get it because I need my coffee or tea in the morning, but it can cause our eyes to twitch. Especially if we have too much before an appointment,” the esthetician shared.
Glasses or Contacts
Clients often wonder about wearing glasses or contacts to their lash extension appointments. Generally, glasses don’t pose a problem, but it’s best to remove contact lenses before the procedure. This precaution ensures the eyes remain comfortable and reduces the chance of irritants getting trapped beneath the lens during the application.
“I recommend removing contact to protect your contacts from a possible chemical reaction. The adhesive for eyelash extensions releases fumes that can potentially melt the contact if not leave some of the chemical residue on the contact lens,” Whittaker revealed.
Speak Up About Allergies or Skin Sensitivities
If you have any allergies, primarily related to adhesives, it’s imperative to inform the technician. They can then decide on the right products or perform a patch test to ensure no allergic reactions.
“During consultations, I always ask about allergies, and again before I begin applying the extensions or adhesive,” she said.
“Unfortunately, not everyone is the right candidate for individual lash extensions. For example, if you have sensitive skin, it can be an issue, depending on your sensitivities. So, please don’t forget to mention any skin sensitivities to your lash technician during the consultation. If you have dermatitis on your eyelid or suffer from styes, eyelash extensions may not be for you,” Whittaker continued.
