“My Journey To 50,” the highly anticipated docuseries that follows Gabrielle Union as she turns 50, premieres Thursday, on BET+. The two-part series follows the “Breaking In” actor as she visits four African countries to commemorate turning 50.

In this series, she is joined by her husband Dwyane Wade, as well as family and friends as she explores the island of Zanzibar, visits the coast of Ghana, spends time at the national parks in Namibia and explores the dazzling nightlife scene in South Africa.

According to the show’s official synopsis, “We join Gabrielle, along with her family and closest friends, as she embarks on a journey that sheds light on the woman she once was and honors who she is in the present while discovering the deeply rooted, badass that she has always been. On this journey, she’ll walk the path of her heritage, gain wisdom and shed what no longer works for her while welcoming others to relearn, rediscover and reconnect as we collectively celebrate our most authentic selves.”

A Celebration of A Milestone

Last year, Union turned 50. As she mentions in the opening of the documentary, she wanted to celebrate the milestone in Africa with the closest people in her life.

“We do big parties, we take fabulous trips around the world but for my fiftieth birthday, what I needed was to be surrounded by my friends and family. And I knew it was a tall order. People have lives and kids and careers and all the things. But it had to be in Africa,” Union said.

Union was joined by daughter Kaavia James Union, her mother Theresa, her niece Chelsea, her Aunt Katie, and sister Tracy. Union was also joined by close friends including Adair Curtis, Essence Atkins and others.

In a statement concerning her upcoming project and the decision to explore the African continent with her loved ones, Union says, “I’ve always had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. Connecting with the birthplace of civilization and my own ancestry helped me inch closer to my true self. There was no other place I wanted to spend my 50th birthday. It was an experience I’ll never forget and I’m excited for audiences to join me on the journey.”
