Moving into your own space is an amazing privilege. Whether you move in with a roommate or get your first apartment on your own, it’s a rewarding feeling to have a space you designate your own. It’s also important to make sure that space is everything you want it to be. When you come home, you want to be able to feel comfortable and at peace. There are a few ways you can ensure your space always brings you joy and provides you the oasis you need to feel calm and refreshed each and every day.

MINIMIZE EXTRANEOUS STUFF

One of the easiest ways to make an apartment feel open, refreshing and comfortable is ridding it of junk. Let’s be honest, we all have too much stuff. I’m sure if you looked around your apartment right now, you could easily find five things (at least) that you don’t need. Go through your belongings and think about why you’re keeping each item. If you aren’t sure why you have something, get rid of it! Your space will feel so much better as a result.

KEEP IT NEAT

Clutter is one of the fastest ways to make an apartment feel overwhelming, and that feeling can bleed into your life. Keep your apartment feeling relaxed and comfortable by keeping everything neatly put away. If everything has a designated spot, it’s easier for your space to stay clutter-free.

ADD SOME GREENERY

Live plants are one of the best ways to add some color and brightness to your space. However, if you have a pet (like me), or you can’t seem to keep a plant alive for your life (also me), faux plants are a great alternative that’ll add that much-needed greenery into your space without all the responsibility of a live houseplant.

MAGNIFY THE NATURAL LIGHT

Another great way to add some brightness to your space is to find ways to magnify the natural light in your apartment. You can try window treatments that allow light into your space, like blinds, sheer curtains or short curtains (as opposed to blackout curtains). You can also try adding vibrant colors to the space such as yellows and oranges or even bright blues and greens to add even more warmth to your space.

KEEP REARRANGING YOUR FURNITURE

Furniture arrangements are an important key to making your apartment feel happy and comforting. Keep rearranging your furniture until you feel joy and/or relief. Your apartment doesn’t have to look a certain way if that’s not what makes you feel good. Arrange your furniture until you feel excited about it.

Your home is your sacred space, and it should bring you as much joy as possible. Changing up and trying some new ideas in your space can make it that much more enjoyable.
