You and your partner have been dating for a year, and it’s almost the holiday season. That means it’s time to cozy up around the dinner table with family and friends, many of whom you’ll meet for the first time. Here’s how to connect with your partners family this holiday season, for the person in a new relationship.

Holiday Shopping

Black Friday marks the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season. While you’re busy shopping for gifts for your partner, friends, and family, invite your partner’s family to join you. Perhaps, you can reach out to your significant other’s mother or sister and ask if they can meet you at the mall. Or you can grab coffee with their family before you take it in to do some online shopping.

Family Games

Another fun way to connect is through a game night. Laughter and playfulness break down walls and can help you connect with your partner’s family. Take out the board games and the cards, break up into teams, and up the ante by adding a prize for the winner.

Football

America’s favorite game takes over our TV screens and streaming services during the holiday season. If your partners family is big on sports, what better way to connect than over the big game. Grab some snacks and drinks, and throw on a jersey for your favorite team. Perhaps you and your partners family support the same team, or are fans of rivals. Lean in the fun and allow the rivalry or camaraderie to spark conversation.

Cooking Together

The holidays are all about good food. Warm, decadent, and luscious meals fill every gathering. You don’t have to be the best chef to help out in the kitchen. Offer to pitch in and utilize time together in the kitchen with your partners family to bring you closer together and create memories.

Intentional Conversation

Don’t minimize the impact of intentional and thoughtful conversation. Starting conversation during the holidays with family and your partners family can be a bit nerve wracking. There are taboo topics like politics and religion, but instead of focusing on those, ask questions their passions, interests, and goals for the new year. Take a sincere interest in other people and watch the difference it makes.
