Lately, many skin care products have been advertising a variety of acids found in their products. Hyaluronic and salicylic acids are all the rage now and loads of people swear by them. There are several ads where brands tout their new products that include these much talked about ingredients. But what are they exactly?

How The Two Acids Work

NYC board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Elyse Love, has seen the benefits of each ingredient. She touts the effects they have on the skin. When it comes to hyaluronic acid, she says it’s mainly used for hydration.

“Hyaluronic acid is a natural occurring compound that exists in the deeper layer of the skin,” she explains. “Hyaluronic acid is also a humectant: it binds water and holds onto water – acting as hydrating/soothing ingredient for your skin. Since it is a hydrating ingredient, those suffering from dry or dull skin can benefit tremendously from this ingredient.”

When explaining the differences between the two, she says salicylic acid has a more preventative use.

“For those with melanin-rich skin, salicylic acid can help not only prevent and solve acne blemishes, but also help avoid hyperpigmentation as acne trauma is often a major cause of this issue for skin of color. Unlike hyaluronic acid that works as a moisturizing ingredient, salicylic acid is more of an exfoliant that can treat whiteheads or blackheads and also help with decreasing oil and sebum secretion on the skin,” Dr. Love said.

Are There Any Down Sides?

If this is your first time learning about these two acids, its possible to be wary. Dr. Love says there isn’t much to worry about.

“I recommend my patients patch test new ingredients or products on their wrist to see how their body reacts before using on the face,” she explained.

Dr. Love says overuse of salicylic acid may lead to irritation.

“For salicylic acid, there is a bit more concern for usage for those with sensitive skin. As an exfoliant, overuse can cause irritation to the skin. It also makes the skin sensitive to sunlight, which can be tough for summer,” Dr. Love said.

Dr. Love says what active ingredients like hyaluronic or salicylic acid are formulated in can either “enhance or negate irritating properties.” She suggests that you start off by using the product a couple days a week to introduce it to your skin with ease.

She also adds that both ingredients are still great options for your skincare routine.

“Both salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid are great to brighten and exfoliate the skin. Especially in the summertime, when we’re all trying to achieve natural summer glow!” she explained.

“It’s formulated with 1% salicylic acid, making it kinder to skin than products with 2% that might cause irritation,” Dr. Love mentioned.
