The spotlight is still shining bright on the Kansas City Chiefs players after their Super Bowl LVIII victory. The wives and girlfriends (WAGs) of the NFL stars have also received their fair share of attention since the big win. A new report from Lucky Gambler analyzed the social media earning potential of the most followed WAGs of the winning team’s players, ranking their influence. Amina Smith, wife of Deon Bush, secured the 4th spot on the list with a following of about 25,000, potentially earning $493 per post. But amidst the glamour and association with Super Bowl champions, a question arises: are these WAGs influential in their own right, or is their status merely a reflection of their husbands’ success? Amina Smith asserts that her influence has always been her own.
Amina Smith Crafting Her Own Identity
From her early days as a journalist in Lawrence, Kansas, to her work at the Big Ten Network and BET, Smith’s career trajectory shaped her diverse audience base.
“I built my audience on social through my career in TV and entertainment along with content creation,” she explained to 21Ninety.
Smith says she’s steadily developed her audience from her varied interests throughout her career. She says individuality has always been important in her relationship with Bush. The pair met at the University of Miami and have been together for about a decade, sharing a one-year-old son.
“We were just two kids dating with our own identities,” she recalls of their college days.
Smith and Bush both have a career in sports; while Bush is on the field, Smith is in the press box giving viewers a play-by-play of the game. While some WAGs can be overshadowed by their husband’s profession, Smith dismisses such concerns.
“I haven’t experienced a time where I’ve felt overlooked because of my husband’s job,” she said.
Instead, she finds that their differing roles within the same industry sparks curiosity and engagement within their relationship.
“In many ways, we work in the same industry, but in vastly different roles with different perspectives,” she explained.
Smith notes that this could be a reason why people are more interested in her role as a journalist than as a WAG.
“In fact, when he tells people what I do they actually want to know more or where they can watch me!” she shared excitedly.
A Life Beyond the Field
Beyond the glamour of being a WAG, Smith acknowledges the complexities of balancing multiple roles.
“For me, it’s more a matter of finding the right balance between those duties while still carving out time for me to be me,” she shares. Emphasizing self-care and personal fulfillment, Amina navigates the whirlwind of life with resilience and grace.
However, being the wife of a Super Bowl champ does come with some misconceptions. The notion that NFL spouses are superficial or stuck up is a common stereotype but Smith says she is far from that.
“I’m always surprised at how many people meet me for the first time and tell me that I’m way more down to earth than they expected,” she reveals. Although she does enjoy a little luxury from time to time, there’s a balance, according to her. There’s a bigger picture in mind.
Looking ahead, Amina’s aspirations extend beyond her roles as a wife and mother.
“Big picture, I’d say I want my legacy to be around service,” she shares. “What I’m able to do with my God given gifts to help others. How did I use my resources to pour into and encourage others to take action on things they’re passionate about.”
Smith aims to leave a lasting impact through her philanthropy and advocacy.
In the realm of WAGs, Amina Smith emerges as a trailblazer, carving her own path of influence and empowerment. Beyond the sidelines, she stands with her power of authenticity, resilience, and individuality. As the world celebrates Super Bowl champions, Smith’s story gives a reminder that behind every successful player stands a remarkable woman with a story of her own.
