Emmy-nominated actress Kerry Washington has made an incredible name for herself. From her bold red carpet looks to her iconic role as “Scandal’s” Olivia Pope, to her vulnerability about mental health, she’s quickly become a Black Hollywood favorite.
Though you’d never know it by scrolling through her social media, she’s a wife, too. Married since 2013, Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha have a long thread of history but choose to keep their relationship out of the spotlight. So who exactly is Kerry Washington’s husband?
Who Is Nnamdi Asomugha?
Before transitioning into producing and acting, Asomugha was an NFL player for 11 years. In 2003, he signed with the Oakland Raiders and made three appearances in the Pro Bowl. Announcing his retirement in 2013, he went on to nourish his creative desires, executive producing “Beasts of No Nation.” He’s also produced films like “Patti Cake$ and Harriet,” and starred in “Sylvie’s Love” and “Crown Heights.”
He also established his own nonprofit in 2010, known as The Asomugha Foundation. Its mission statement is to make a “positive impact on the disadvantaged youth in the United States and the underprivileged orphans and widows in Africa.” With Washington using most of her social media presence for activism, one can only assume they felt a connection through their humanitarianism.
They Keep Their Marriage Private
After 10 years of marriage, not much is known about Washington and Asomugha, and they certainly like to keep it that way. As self-declared homebodies, even their wedding flew under the radar, exchanging vows in a private ceremony in Idaho at a close friend’s home. They went through such great lengths to protect the wedding, in fact, that caterers were told they were setting up for a family reunion.
During an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” however, Washington did open up a bit more, sharing that she and Nnamdi first met backstage while doing her Broadway debut, portraying the role of Susan in David Mamet’s “Race.” While their meeting was “love at first sight,” it’s also been a slow burn, which is their secret to lasting the test of time.
They’re Parents of Three
While Asomugha entered the marriage with a daughter from a previous relationship, he and Washington went on to have children of their own as well. The couple welcomed their first baby, Isabelle Amarachi, in April 2014, and their second baby, Caleb Kelechi, in October 2016. While motherhood has brought joy and meaning into Washington’s life, she keeps her kids just as under wraps, refusing to exploit them for social media.
True love has nothing to prove to the world, and Washington and Asomugha seem to have this marriage thing completely figured out. In March 2023, during an interview with “Marie Claire” she stated, “I’m in my immediate truth with him. Those mirrors are important because they help me get back to myself.”
