The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike has taken Hollywood by storm. Now the mayor of Los Angeles is speaking her peace about the strikes and their impact. Mayor Karen Bass called for “a fair and equitable solution” in contract negotiations for both sides seemingly taking the side of the actors and writers.
Mayor Karen Bass On The Strikes
In a statement issued this week, the Los Angeles mayor detailed her thoughts.
“Los Angeles is experiencing a summer of struggle to make ends meet. In all industries—education, hospitality, goods delivery or entertainment—Angelenos deserve fair contracts,” she explained. “Whether you’re a writer who has been on strike for more than 72 days or an actor who has been on strike for 72 hours, wages and health benefits to afford housing, food and the basic necessities to survive should be a minimum requirement in discussions,”
Bass says a a strong business sector is essential for Los Angeles to become affordable for working families once again.
“This is a historic inflection point for our city as our entertainment industry experiences economic pressure and business uncertainty. A fair and equitable solution must be reached,” she concluded.
This new statement comes after Bass previously shared her thoughts, seen at the time as pretty neutral. Shortly after last week’s strike began, she pushed for “all sides to come to the table and work around the clock until an equitable agreement is reached.”
She said it was an urgent issue that must be resolved adding that she would be working to make that happen.
In addition to Bass’ comments, more actors have been coming out to speak in favor of the strike. Comedian, Mo’Nique is one of the most recent to give her take. She took to Instagram to post an old video of her infamous interview with Steve Harvey to express that striking isn’t a new concept to her.
“Folks keep asking me how I feel about the strike! As you can see from above I’ve been verbally striking for years, but some of my brothers & sisters as the video shows have been striking me down for years,” she said in the caption. “But, yes I support the WGA & SAG/AFTRA thats why @countessdvaughn & I filed a lawsuit to get our money from the parkers!!!”
