The singer shared that she believes entire societies work hard to make Black women believe they’re not beautiful or desirable. She said people discrediting Black women’s beauty are jealous and stated that she is breaking beauty standards.

“Why do y’all think that entire societies work so hard to convince Black women that they’re not beautiful, that they’re not desired,” Lizzo questioned in the TikTok video. “At this point it’s embarrassing how hard people are trying to discredit Black women.”

Lizzo Claims ‘I Am The Beauty Standard’

This isn’t the first time the “Juice” singer has spoken about beauty standards. As a plus-size, Black woman, Lizzo’s looks are constantly being commented on. She previously posted a video in response to all of the comments made about her body lately. Lizzo proclaimed, “I am the beauty standard.”

Lizzo has never shied away from reminding haters about her unwavering self-confidence.

Beauty Standards Rooted In Anti-blackness

Worldwide beauty standards often favor Eurocentric features – a small nose, straight hair, and pale skin. In comparison, it’s common for anything that showcases ethnic features to be shunned or disregarded. According to Germ Magazine, these beauty standards are due to the “widespread colonialism of the 1800s, the European societal norms have lingered in other societies and have taken away from different cultures’ values of beauty.”

“I’m breaking the cycle of the perpetuating beauty standard. Walk with your head held high. You are beautiful,” Lizzo said to end the video.
