A new people's princess has been born!

On Sunday, June 6, 2021, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they welcomed their new baby girl on Friday, June 4, 2021. The two-time parents also announced they've named their daughter Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

"Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA," the couple said in an official statement. "She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well and settling in at home. Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, "The Princess of Wales."

The British Royal Family also released an official statement saying they were "delighted" about the news of baby Lilibet's birth. Lili will join her older brother, Archie, 2, and their parents at their California home.
Twitter exploded with joy over the news of baby Lilibet's birth, and you can see some of the best reactions below.

As a bit of history for British Royal Family enthusiasts: exactly 25 years before baby Lili's birth, Princess Diana paid a visit to Northwestern University in what was then called a "historic" visit. Meghan Markle, herself, is a graduate of Northwestern University.

Before her death, Princess Diana said she regretted not being able to live in the United States. It's a nice bit of poetic justice that, 25 years to the day after her historic Northwestern University visit, her granddaughter — born to a Black American woman and a graduate of Northwestern — fulfilled that long-held wish. Congratulations are in order for Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and little Archie Mountbatten-Windsor!
