Nicki Minaj continues to prove her greatness and rap genius to fans and critics alike. The rapper’s recent single “Super Freaky Girl” just debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This is the third time that the “We Go Up” rapper is scoring a number one hit. Additionally, Minaj is the only other female rapper to debut at number one since Lauryn Hill’s 1998 smash hit “Doo Wop (That Thing).”
The Song
“Super Freaky Girl” is a catchy track that samples Rick James’ 1981 classic “Super Freak.” The beginning of the song prominently showcases James’ vocals before Minaj leans in with her witty word play and cutting edge lyricism. Before the release of the record, Minaj had teased a snippet of the song on her social media, which was powerful enough to pique the interested of music critics, and most notably, her fan base, the ever devoted “Barbz.” After the release of the track on Aug. 12, it quickly became an online sensation, with fans recreating Tik Toks to accompany the song.

This Is The Year Of Minaj
Minaj has since released “Super Freak Girl (Roman Remix),” a follow up to the original release, featuring one of her renowned alter egos Roman Zolanski. She has also teased a visual for “Super Freaky Girl” sporting Barbiecore themes. In addition to her continuous prominence as one of pop culture’s most prominent figures, Minaj continues to prove that her artistry cannot be tamed, watered down or extinguished. Through grit, dedication, and the ability to bounce back from adversity, Minaj has solidified herself as an icon whose star is evergreen.

In continuance with her cultural relevance, Minaj will be receiving the MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the Video Music Awards this year which is scheduled to take place on Aug. 28. Earlier this year, Minaj also announced that she would joining Maxim to serve as the creative director for Maxim magazine and the global ambassador for MaximBet, their sports betting brand.
