Sanya Richards-Ross is beaming with joy to meet her little one. But unfortunately, the road to having a second child hasn’t been easy. In an interview with PEOPLE, the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star opened up about a prior miscarriage.
During the latest season of “RHOA,” viewers witnessed the Richards-Ross’ journey to baby number two, including when the star learned she was pregnant. Sadly, she miscarried two months later. She recalls the experience being extremely traumatic.
“I was in New York and had a really bad miscarriage. I had to go to the hospital. I had to have a blood transfusion. It was very, very, very scary,” Richards-Ross recalled. “You already opened your heart to becoming a mom, so it was awful. Even just talking about it…it really was a difficult time.”
Richards-Ross’ loss made her hesitant about trying again with husband, Aaron Ross.
“Don’t get me wrong, Aaron and I, we loved being parents,” Richards-Ross added. “But all these years in, we had just gotten into a good rhythm where we finally figured out how we wanted to parent. We had that balance where we were communicating well again, I was finally working again… And so I was skeptical about having another child.”
She shared how that miscarriage put things into perspective for her when it came to having another child.
“I didn’t realize until then how much I really wanted to become a mom again and how much of a blessing it is to be a mom,” Richards-Ross said.
Just one month later, she was pregnant again. She says she was shocked it happened so quickly.
“I didn’t think it’d happen so quick again. But my husband, he prides himself. He’s like, ‘I never miss. Whenever you’re ready, I’m ready,’ ” she admitted.

To go from not being sure if I wanted to have another baby, to deciding that I was ready and suffering a miscarriage, which was one of the toughest experiences in my life. God knew my heart, and I feel blessed to have another opportunity to be a Mommi. This gift is for all of us… but I’m most excited to make deucey a big brother. He prays for his sister/brother every night. My heart and belly are so full. Thanks for all the love today. Ross party of 4 loading…..I’m taking you all on the journey, so hang on for the ride!”
She is currently four months pregnant and due in December.
“It’s going to be the best Christmas gift ever,” she said. “But I just couldn’t be happier and more clear about. I know I can do this. I’ve done it before. I have the support. I know what to expect. I’m so ready to meet this little one.”
In addition to her excitement, her son, Aaron Jermaine, is excited to become a big brother. As of now, Richards-Ross hasn’t revealed the sex of the baby, but she may share the sex on the ‘RHOA’ reunion.
