Simone Biles has broken her silence on her return to gymnastics. Last week reports surfaced that Biles’ name was listed for a few events in an upcoming competition. Then, USA Gymnastics announced that the four-time gold medalist will be competing at the 2023 U.S. Classic in August. Now, the gymnastics star is finally speaking about her comeback.
Simone Biles Is Back!
Biles took to social media to confirm all of the rumors.
“sorry I’ve been a little MIA since the announcement,” she wrote. “I’m overwhelmed with all of your messages, support & love! excited to get back out on the competition floor! XOXO”
Gymnastics Chief Programs Officer Stefanie Korepin said in a press release. “Every athlete is at a different place in their season and career, and we will support each of them, wherever they are in their journey.”
The public has not seen Biles compete since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics when she had to pull out mid-event. She made a few mistakes in her performance which she blamed on the “twisties.” This is the term gymnastics athletes use to describe the loss of the ability to sense their body moving through the air. She competed in one more event a few days later then took an indefinite break from the sport to focus on her mental health.
Throughout her absence, she has decided to live her best life. Biles partnered with mental health organizations to spread awareness. She has also found love in NFL player, Johnathan Owens. The two go married in a courthouse ceremony in April. A month later, the two took the wedding festivities to Cabo San Lucas for a much larger event that included family and friends.
