Celebrating two years of sobriety, Angela “Blac Chyna” White has done the work to completely rewrite her life. She’s developed a relationship with God, prioritized her fitness and even reversed her BBL. White found herself ready to be reborn after a period of rock bottoms and deep introspection. Now, she is also part of a group of celebrities that are sober. The mom of two recently celebrated two years of being alcohol-free.
“I’m really excited for the two years and many more to come,” she shared. “I promise you, every day that I’m sober… it’s definitely worth it, and if you guys are on your sobriety journey, keep going.”
As she documents every milestone along her transformation, many of those watching feel called to pursue healthier choices as well. Going alcohol-free is currently trending, as young adults in the U.S. are drinking far less than in prior decades. White is among many other Black female celebrities who have chosen a sober lifestyle, whether it was for the health benefits or to overcome an addiction. Here are some of those women and their inspiring stories.
Ari Lennox
R&B songstress Ari Lennox has openly shared her newfound journey with sobriety on Instagram. Completely transforming her physical and mental health, she doesn’t know if it will last forever, but she does know that she doesn’t want to get to a point where she depends on alcohol anymore. The 32-year-old added it made her feel “more stable, happy, alert, [and] safe.” She also admitted to being “more accepting of things I can’t control and more responsible with things I can.” Another benefit to her sobriety has been less social anxiety and more freedom to leave when she want to leave.
Tyra Banks
Though she certainly faced the pressure of dabbling in all kinds of vices during her years in the beauty industry, supermodel Tyra Banks never succumbed. She’s noted that she “never had a taste for alcohol.”
Naomi Campbell
Tyra Banks isn’t the only supermodel who has opted for a clean lifestyle. After collapsing at a photo shoot in 1999, Naomi Campbell checked into rehab and started attending NA and AA. Losing Gianni Versace drove her to cope with alcohol, leading to many tumultuous moments. To this day, she remains sober, free from all drugs and alcohol.
Jada Pinket Smith
Growing up surrounded by addiction, actress Jada Pinket Smith shares that she hasn’t had a drink since the 90s.
“I’ve learned that recovery isn’t just for those suffering from substance abuse,” Smith said. “Recovery is about recovering from our traumas, abuse, neglect, abandonment, lack of self-worth, disappointments, failed relationships, the loss of loved ones and so on.”
Jennifer Hudson
The list of celebrities that are sober also includes Jennifer Hudson who has never had even a sip of alcohol. She says it’s simply due to a lack of desire. The actress shared that she has to extensively research her characters any time she plays someone struggling with some an addiction or vice. Her sobriety has also aided in her weight loss transformation. She lost 80 pounds in one year.
Queen Latifah
Nearly 30 years sober, actress and MC Queen Latifah made the brave choice to turn her life around. In 2002, she was arrested for possession after she used substances to cope with the loss of her brother. She’s now free of all vices and lives a clean life.
