Missy Elliot’s music has consistently been a staple in Black music history. From her unique flows and out-of-the-box music videos, she was the blueprint for a generation of hip-hop artists who wanted to create a name for themselves. As any legend should, the artist was recently recognized for her work. She made history on Wednesday as she became the first female rapper inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The rapper, singer, songwriter and producer’s career speaks for itself. With over 30 million records sold worldwide, she has won several awards, including five Grammys. In 2019, The MTV Video Music Awards honored Elliot with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Now with this new history-making recognition, Elliot’s accolades continue to prove her excellence cannot be questioned.

Elliot shared the news with her followers via social media writing that the win wasn’t just for her.

“I want to say this is HUGE not for just me but all my Sisters in HIPHOP this door is now OPEN to showcase the hard work & what many of us contribute to MUSIC,” she tweeted. “I have cried all morning because I am GRATEFUL thank you @rockhall & all on the committee & Supafriends.”

Missy Elliot’s work has not gone unnoticed. In 2019, her acceptance of the MTV VMAs Video Vanguard Award solidified just that.
